The Appian Story

Appian was founded in 1999 by Michael Beckley, Robert Kramer, Marc Wilson and Matthew Calkins, who serves as CEO.

In 2001, the company developed Army Knowledge Online, regarded at the time as “the world's largest intranet." In 2010, Appian Cloud was accredited with Federal Information Security Management Act (FISMA) low-level security by the U.S. Education Department. In 2013, it received FISMA Moderate Authorization and Accreditation from the General Services Administration (GSA).

In 2014, the company received $37.5 million in secondary investments from New Enterprise Associates, which was paid out to shareholders. In 2015, transportation company Ryder began using the Appian apps instead of paper processing during the checkout process and internally for truck maintenance records.

On May 25, 2017, Appian became a publicly-traded company, trading as APPN on the NASDAQ Global Exchange. In May 2019, it released Appian AI, enabling artificial intelligence capabilities on its platform. On January 7, 2020, it announced acquisition of Novayre Solutions SL, developer of the Jidoka robotic process automation (RPA ) platform. In March 2020, the company updated the platform's Artificial intelligence and robotic process automation capabilities. In August 2021, Appian acquired the process mining company Lana Labs.

Culture & vibe

We’re innovative and looking for new team members who think outside the box and bring curiosity and collaboration skills to the team. We’re a growing company, with many growth opportunities for our employees to explore and advance in their career.

We pride ourselves on having a people first mentality. This means being generous, inclusive, respectful, and willing to help others — including from your first interaction with us when you apply for a job and throughout the entire interview process. We’re here to support you, and through your time as a candidate, and then (hopefully!) as an employee.

Work to impact. We work thoughtfully to drive positive outcomes in everything that we do. People first. We are generous, inclusive, respectful, and are willing to help others. Lead with agility. We are flexible, adapt quickly to change, and are driven by
innovation. Commit to collaboration. We succeed when we align on goals, and support each other in everything we do.

Recruitment process

We get it, job interviews can be nerve-wracking. At times, they can feel overwhelming, and there’s also a lot to weigh when it comes to making a big decision like changing careers!

That’s why at Appian, we want to make sure you have everything you need ahead of time to prepare for your interview. We want you to be able to bring your best self to your interview and hope you can show up feeling prepared and confident to showcase your achievements and expertise.

Before your interview: Prep call with your recruiter.

First, you’ll talk to a recruiter who will set up a kickoff call before the interview. This call will act as a prep session where you and your recruiter review the role responsibilities, how to prepare, and who you’ll be meeting with in the interview process. This includes the hiring manager, and depending on the role, other Appian employees or executives.

Your recruiter knows the position and the team well, and they’re an amazing source of information.

You’ll also receive email communications with full names of everyone you’ll be interviewing with, and how the interview will work.

Your virtual interview will be through Google Meet, and you’ll get a text from our coordinator right before the interview time to check in that you’re ready to go and see if you have any tech issues. When logistics and safety allow, interviews are also conducted at our HQ, however most of Appian interviews are conducted through Google Meet.

During your interview: Use the STAR method.

To help communicate effectively, we encourage candidates to prepare experiences you’re most proud of ahead of time using the STAR method — situation, task, action and result of past achievements you want to highlight.

This enables a well-organized, succinct delivery of your experience while leaving you well positioned to focus on follow-up questions. Remember to focus on not only what was accomplished but why it was meaningful.

You’ll know the focus of the interview ahead of time from your recruiter, and it could include a variety of behavioral or technical questions, depending on the role.

After your interview: Recruiter follow-up.

You did it, congratulations! You’ll hear from your recruiter about next steps.

For engineering positions, after the interview you may be invited to do a technical-focused “virtual on-site” event where you’ll meet with a brand ambassador, four engineers (including a hiring manager), and an executive.

The whole application process takes about 2-3 weeks, depending on the position and your availability.

Social Contributions

Appian operates office workplaces to create our digital product as opposed to traditional manufacturing facilities.  Nonetheless, we are working to reduce the negative  environmental impacts of our business operations by  lessening energy consumption, waste, and air and automobile travel and ensuring Appian’s suppliers are working toward like environmental sustainability goals. Measuring and reporting on the status of our environmental performance is an ongoing initiative (drawing on data we  capture through new business applications and other internal information technology systems), the results of which will be used to comply with applicable regulations; assess our progress toward environmental sustainability; and create a “scorecard” to track our environmental performance on a yearly basis. We are currently planning how best to efficiently capture  and report on information about the environmental  responsibility of Appian’s tier-one suppliers, working across our partner, legal, and finance teams.  In the future, we intend that new suppliers will complete a questionnaire as part of the onboarding process, as well as annually thereafter, as  part of our longer-term effort to ensure a sustainable  procurement framework.

What Graduates Say About Them
  • Culture is really good, feel quite well supported.
  • We are a medium-sized team here in Sydney, but headquarters in America provides us with a lot of support, such as 1 month long training when we first joined and many work benefits. Best thing hands down are still the people.
  • The ability to learn and develop both technical and soft skills which can be immediately put to into action when working on a case.
  • Big learning curve, many moving parts.
  • Time differences between America make it hard to feel like you are part of the larger organisation and General meetings occur outside of normal business hours some of the time.
  • Can be difficult sometimes to keep up to date with new feature releases and being able to take full advantage of the software's capabilities.
